Thermoplastics are polymers that can be repeatedly melted, shaped, formed, and then cooled back into solids. Thermoplastic tubing plays an essential role in medical device applications, offering flexibility, transparency, and ease of bonding and/or welding. Saint-Gobain has expertise in processing an extensive library of thermoplastic materials including PVC, TPO, TPU, TPE, PP, PC, PEBA, PEEK, and more.  

At Saint-Gobain, our flagship thermoplastic tubing for medical applications is the Tygon® ND-100 series. This formulation is offered in a range of durometers, from 40 to 80 shore A.  

  • Tygon ND 100 series tubing is formulated with a plasticizer other than DEHP, however, trace levels of DEHP are not controlled.    
  • Tygon ND 100 series products have met the criteria of Biological Test for Plastics, Class VI, as described in USP <88>.  Tygon ND 100-65 formulation has also met the criteria for various ISO 10993 tests.  

Saint-Gobain also offers Tygon® MPF 100, a thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO), and Tygon® MPF 300, a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). TPO tubing offers a balance of flexibility and durability, ensuring longevity even in demanding environments. TPU tubing has good wear resistance which makes it an ideal choice for applications where durability and abrasion resistance are important.

  • Biocompatibility: The biocompatibility characteristics of many of our thermoplastic (TP) and thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) formulations have been evaluated, such as USP Class VI and various aspects of ISO 10993.   • Flexibility and Elasticity: TP and TPE tubing exhibit excellent flexibility and elasticity, allowing the tubing to bend, twist, and conform to complex shapes without kinking. These properties are beneficial for peristaltic pumps, diagnostic equipment, organ preservation devices, and other dynamic medical equipment.  
  • Clarity: TP and TPE tubing provide good clarity, allowing visual inspection of fluid flow. Transparent tubing is advantageous for monitoring the flow of blood, medications, and other fluids.
  • Ease of Sterilization: TP and TPE tubing can typically be sterilized using autoclave, ethylene oxide gas, and gamma irradiation, helping to ensure the safety and sterilization of the medical devices into which they are assembled.
  • Chemical Resistance: TP and TPE tubing materials are known to demonstrate good chemical resistance, which can make them well-suited for diagnostic equipment and reagent manufacturing.
