Silicone rubber has found widespread use in medical applications and brings with it many advantages. It has excellent biocompatibility and inertness (does not promote bacteria growth), has high temperature resistance (up to 365°F or 180°C), and is available in a wide range of durometers (10 Shore A to 80 Shore A). It has low surface tension, is chemically and thermally stable, and has tolerance for sterilization methods including dry heat and gamma radiation.
